Understanding TMJ and Orofacial Pain

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. Problems affecting these joints and the muscles that move your jaw are called temporomandibular disorders, or TMDs, often referred to as “TMJ.” Symptoms may include jaw tenderness, stiffness, painful clicking or difficulty opening your mouth.

Orofacial pain refers to pain involving the mouth, jaw or face. It can have several causes, so an evaluation is important before choosing treatment. Painless jaw clicking alone usually does not require treatment.

BOTOX and XEOMIN for Muscle-Related Jaw Pain

At Star Smiles Dentistry, we offer both BOTOX and XEOMIN as options for selected patients with muscle-related jaw discomfort. Both are botulinum toxin type A products that temporarily reduce activity in injected muscles. They may be considered when clenching or grinding contributes to jaw pain.

Dr. Nisarg Parikh can evaluate your symptoms and discuss whether either option is appropriate. These treatments do not repair damage within the jaw joint or address every cause of orofacial pain.

Neither BOTOX nor XEOMIN is FDA-approved for TMD treatment. Their use for this purpose is considered off-label, and research on botulinum toxin for TMD has produced mixed results. Your consultation will include a discussion of potential benefits, risks and alternatives.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

Be ready to describe where you feel pain, when it occurs and how it affects your daily activities. Bring a list of medications and information about previous treatment. Our dentist can evaluate your concerns and discuss whether BOTOX, XEOMIN, a more conservative approach or referral for further evaluation is appropriate.

If you proceed with injections, your treatment plan will explain the product selected, muscles being treated, expected effects, aftercare and follow-up. BOTOX and XEOMIN are distinct products, and their dosing units are not interchangeable.

Tell the treating clinician about previous botulinum toxin injections, muscle or nerve conditions, swallowing or breathing problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are BOTOX and XEOMIN the first treatments for TMJ pain?

Usually, simpler approaches are considered first. Depending on the diagnosis, these may include changes to jaw habits, guided exercises, physical therapy or other conservative care. An evaluation helps determine which approach fits your symptoms.

How do I know whether BOTOX or XEOMIN is right for me?

Your dentist will review your symptoms, medical history and previous treatment before discussing either option. Both temporarily reduce muscle activity, but neither is appropriate for every patient or every cause of jaw pain.

Will these treatments stop teeth grinding permanently?

BOTOX and XEOMIN are not permanent cures for grinding or clenching. Their muscle-relaxing effects are temporary, and reducing muscle activity does not necessarily eliminate the underlying habit.

What are the possible side effects?

Possible effects include injection-site discomfort, bruising and muscle weakness, which may affect chewing. Rarely, toxin effects can spread beyond the injection area. Seek immediate medical help for difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment.

How much does treatment cost?

Cost depends on the product and treatment recommended for your needs. Contact our team for an estimate and ask your insurer about coverage for this off-label use before scheduling injections.
